Box Office Preview: "Inside Out 2"

Movies are back! After a struggling April and May leading to horrendous headlines and discourse about the future of movies, we are close to return to normal. At least for the time being. Bad Boys: Ride or Die showed that audiences will show up. A great opening domestic and overseas for a $100M+ worldwide opening. That was the warmup. The real monster arrives this weekend with Inside Out 2. The Pixar sequel to the critically acclaimed Inside Out (2015) that become a financially success grossing $356M domestic and $857M worldwide. The fourth biggest movie of the year.

Despite that people have been cautious for this sequel. Disney had an horrible 2023 and saw there movies bomb after bomb with the exception of Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 3. Fear not all signs indicate Inside Out 2 will deliver. Pre-sales have been slowly but surely amping up nicely. Initial projections pegged the movie for a great $85M opening weekend. That in itself would have been terrific. However, this movie is aiming much higher. The movie is now looking at a $100M+ opening weekend and thus becoming the first movie to open to 9-digits since Barbie in July 2023. It´s been a minute. Reviews are excellent with a glowing 92% on RT and early WOM from markets like Korea is very positive. Father’s day on Sunday will boost business and summer days in effect will surely help legs.

Overseas the studio is projecting a modest $50M with many big markets sitting out until next week but the movie is ready to destroy those projections. The movie is looking at a massive $10M+ opening in Korea and $20M+ from Mexico. In the Philippines the movie had the third biggest opening day ever only behind Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame. This movie is looking closer to a $200M+ opening than the $130M+ outed by the studio.

Overseas: $125-140M
